BOTSWANA EXPLORER Photographic Safari
10 Days
The “ Botswana Explorer “ photographic safari will take you on a visual journey that focuses on the two major attractions in Botswana .... the Okavango Delta in the Khwai Concession and the mighty Chobe River in the Chobe National Park. The delta is the ultimate wildlife eden offering amazing photo opportunities that include Wild Dog, Lion, Leopard and incredible bird photography. Botswana is also host to one quarter of Africa’s entire elephant population so continuos encounters with large herds is not uncommon. You could even see them crossing some of the national roads. What makes the Botswana Explorer safari so special is that you have a sense of true wilderness at all times and this mainly due to difficult accessibility to the wilderness areas and also to a small human population. Only 1.9 million people inhabit this vast country.
The first night upon arrival from your international flight will be spent in Maun at the chosen lodge for the occasion . You will be met by Mario Moreno who will join you for dinner followed by a pre-trip briefing. The following morning after breakfast you will be transferred via air charter to the selected Camp where you will spend the next 6 nights. Another air transfer will take you to Kasane where the remaining 3 nights will be spent onboard the Chobe Princess deep in the Chobe National Park.
The Okavango Delta is produced by seasonal flooding. The Okavango river drains the summer (January–February) rainfall from the Angola highlands and the surge flows 1,200 kilometers in approximately one month. The waters then spread over the 250 km by 150 km area of the delta over the next four months (March–June). The high temperature of the delta causes rapid transpiration and evaporation, resulting in a cycle of rising and falling water level that was not fully understood until the early 20th century. The flood peaks between June and August, during Botswana’s dry winter months, when the delta swells to three times its permanent size, attracting animals from kilometers around and creating one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of wildlife. Chief’s Island, the largest island in the delta, was formed by a fault line which uplifted an area over 70 km long and 15 km wide. Historically it was reserved as an exclusive hunting area for the chief. It now provides the core area for much of the resident wildlife when the waters rise.
Chobe National Park, in northern Botswana, has one of the largest concentrations of game in Africa. By size, it is the third largest park of the country, after the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Gemsbok National Park, and is the most diverse. It is also the country's first national park and has the highest concentration of elephants in Africa. Approximately 70,000 roam freely in Chobe. There are three distinctive areas in Chobe which are Serondela, the Savute Marsh and the Linyanti Marsh. We will be concentrating in the Serondela area making use of a private specialized photographic boat custom designed with wildlife photography in mind.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1-6
Upon arrival at Maun International Airport where you will be met and transferred to your domestic flight to the Delta. Mario Moreno, your safari leader, will be expecting you and will join you on the short 35 minute light aircraft charter flight will take you to the designated airstrip in the heart of the Okavango Delta for your 6 night stay. After settling in at the Camp you will have time to take in the stunning views of the lush surroundings or prepare your photographic gear before lunch. From here we will explore the private concession in search of photographic opportunities of species adapted to an aquatic life like the Red Lechwe and Sitatunga. Wild Dog, Lion and Leopard are some of the predators we will be looking out for. General game will be plentiful and some of the bird species to look out for are the African Skimmer, Goliath Heron, saddle-Billed Storks, Tawny Eagles and the Fish Eagle that will add the soundtrack to our days at the Camp. A total of 8 game drives and optional motorized boat sessions ( perfect for bird and hippo photography ) will be enjoyed at the Camp. The duration of each game drive will be 3-4 hours. Off-road driving is permitted during this leg of the trip since we are in Private Concessions. There will be plenty of time for casual photo talks and workshops during the relaxed hours of the day for those interested. Each day will start with a wake up call before sunrise with coffee or tea in preparation for the morning photo session. At around 09:30 we will be back for brunch followed by free time that will be used to relax or join your Mario for a casual photo workshop where images will be reviewed and processed. Some snacks, drinks, coffee and tea will be served just before we leave on our evening game drive around 15:30 which will go on until the sun sets before returning back to camp for drinks by the campfire before dinner is served putting an end to a fantastic day in the Delta.
Day 6-9
After an early morning photo session we will return to camp for a well deserved breakfast before being transferred to the airstrip for our flight to Kasane for the second part of this safari that will take us to the northern section of Chobe National Park where you will spend 4 nights onboard the Ichobezi Safari Boat that will dock along the Chobe river in different locations right where the action is. This will guarantee plenty photo opportunities that will include large herds of elephant by the Chobe River which we will try to capture at sunset for a memorable African landscape. The Puku is a rare antelope that occurs only in this area and that we will try to find. For bird photography amazing colonies of Carmine Bee-Eaters in season and Fish Eagles which are abundant will present great photo opportunities. After being transferred to the Safari Boat and settling in you will have some time to unwind from your journey. Lunch will be served while slowly cruising deep into Chobe. After lunch you will have some time to prepare your photographic gear for the first afternoon session on the Photographic Motorized Boat at around 15:00. We will be looking out for herds Elephants that usually come down to the river every afternoon and will be pursuing amazing close up and low angle shots of these giants from the water. All water sessions will take approximately 3-4 hours but will depend on sightings so times are flexible. Right after sunset we will be heading back to the lodge for drinks before dinner is served at 20:00 putting an end to the first day in Chobe. During the following days the Safari Boat will change locations in search of different opportunities. A total of 6 photo session will be enjoyed.
Day 10

Time to sadly pack your bags in preparation for the transfer by tender boat to the customs office on Impalila Island to exit Namibia.
