WILD COLORS OF COSTA RICA

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPEDITION

WILD COLORS OF COSTA RICA Photographic Expedition
8 Days

The “Wild Colors of Costa Rica” wildlife photography workshop tour takes you to arguably the best place in Costa Rica for Wildlife Photography. The wild and remote Osa Peninsula is situated on the Pacific coast just north of Panama. Along with the sheltered Golfo Dulce, Corcovado and Peñas Blancas National Parks, it is Costa Rica’s foremost natural highlight. National Geographic refers to the Peninsula as one of the most biologically rich and diverse regions on our planet. Roughly half of it is occupied by Corcovado National Park, home to a mind-blowing range of wildlife that includes the endangered giant anteater, tapir, harpy eagle, king vulture, all 4 monkey species and all Costa Rica’s big cats like jaguar, puma, jaguarondi and ocelot - though these are more difficult to see. The adjacent Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve, a number of private reserves, and Peñas Blancas National Park further extend the protected area to create a huge wildlife corridor. As far as marine life goes, a variety of dolphins can be seen all year off the coast of the Osa Peninsula like spotted, spinner, bottlenose, rough-toothed and common dolphin. Humpback whales can be seen at various times of year. Humpbacks migrating northwards from Antarctica are seen from July to November and can also present fantastic photo opportunities.

Our base from which we will explore the Osa Peninsula will be BOTANIKA Curio Collection , strategically located very close to Puerto Jimenez and it’s airstrip making it very convenient with very short transfers on arrival and/or departures. During this photo expedition you will have the opportunity to learn, practice and improve a variety of photographic techniques like wildlife in action, birds in flight, landscapes and macro photography during the day and at night. Several group workshops for image review and processing are planned as are 1 on 1 sessions to address specific photographic needs. During all photographic sessions photographic guidance will be available and all species and habitat related questions will be answered by our professional guides that by the way happen to be excellent photographers too.

Over 400 species of birds, 140 species of mammals and countless reptiles, amphibians and insects gives you an idea of the photographic potential in the Osa Peninsula. It is important to note that it is also the only place in Costa Rica where you will see all 4 species of monkeys.

Day 1

Upon arrival in San Jose International Airport ( SJO ) you will be met and transferred to the selected hotel for your overnight stay in San Jose. The hotel will be conveniently located within a short drive from the airport terminal and will have all the facilities you would expect. Mario will meet all participants for dinner and a brief introduction of the exciting days ahead.

Day 2

After an early breakfast at the Doubletree hotel you will be transferred to the airport for your 45 minute flight on a 12 seater Cessna Caravan to Puerto Jimenez. Incredible scenery for above as we fly down to the Osa Peninsula so keep you camera or smart phone out for some nice memory shots. On arrival an extremely short road transfer to the Botanika Resort for your next 6 nights. After checking in and unpacking clothes and gear it will be time for a proper tour brief during which you will be introduced to the guides that will be accompanying us throughout the entire tour, agenda for the week will be confirmed and general camera settings, lenses, light conditions, etc ... will be discussed. Time to ask as many questions as you want . . . Before lunch ( around 12:30 ) we will do a walk around the pristine grounds of the resort to put into practice some of the things discussed during the brief. It will also be a good time to get familiarised with some of the photographic situations we will encounter during the tour. There is plenty to shoot around the resort without even leaving the property. After lunch we will do a half day rainforest session not too far from Crocodile Bay. Dinner will be served at around 19:00.

Day 3

An early wake up call and a hearty breakfast will be the start of an exciting day ahead. Today we will be heading further out into the rainforest with a packed picnic lunch in search of the "Perfect Moment". We will be stopping constantly as we come across photo opportunities. No hiking involved today as all of the shooting will be done with our vehicle in sight. We will be looking out for monkeys, birds and reptiles. After lunch in the rainforest we will head back to Botanika for some rest before our first Image Review & Processing Workshop in the afternoon. We will be looking at some of the images captured so far, processing them and looking at how we can improve in the field in the days ahead. Dinner at 19:30. After dinner time for our first Night Session. It will take place on property grounds and only macro lenses and flash will be required. Different lighting techniques will be approached. This session can be challenging but will definitely be a highlight of the trip. In fact more night sessions will be available if the group or part of wants to do them. They are conducted inside the property grounds so it will be easy to arrange.

Day 4

After breakfast we will be heading out deep into the rainforest to an area bordering the famous Corcovado National Park. This area is truly amazing and teeming with creatures of all colours and sizes. It will be a full day today with packed lunch. Today we will also be doing some macro photography along with general wildlife and possibly some iconic landscapes if the weather helps. After a long action packed day we will head back to Botanika in time for a nice hot shower before dinner.

Day 5

Today we will be exploring a river. Our focus will be on the incredible amount of birds without forgetting that there will be opportunities with monkeys and reptiles. Photography will all be done from a motorised boat along a meandering river and will be dependant on tides so exact time of this session will be confirmed the day before. Lunch will also be packed today. We will make it back to the resort in time for a well deserved rest and/or an opportunity for those that want to participate on 1 on 1  workshop sessions. These will be carried out throughout the afternoon right up to dinner time. We can address photographic techniques and processing techniques. Dinner will be served at 19:30

Day 6

After another early wake up call and breakfast we will make our way to a place very close to Botanika. Our focus will be the smaller creatures that the Osa Peninsula has to offer. Insects, Spiders, frogs, lizards and butterflies. We will back at the resort in time for lunch. Some free time to rest or carry on shooting around the property grounds after lunch. Our 2nd Image Review & Processing Workshop will take place this afternoon. Dinner will be served at 19:30

Day 7

Today is your last day. There will be a free morning so no need to wake up early . . . You can use this time to rest, relax by the pool, indulge in the resort spa or practice photography around the resort grounds. After lunch we will be heading out along the coastal rainforest in search of those last wildlife encounters. It will be a long afternoon so we will get back to the resort well after sunset.

Day 8

Breakfast and time to pack before checking out. A 45 minute flight will take you back to San Jose in time for your international connection back home . . . Sadly the tour has come to an end but on the bright side you will be returning home filled up with memorable moments, new friends made and hard drives loaded with amazing imagery.
